City & Guilds News

The City & Guilds 2381 examination is carried out online, using an online interface known as GOLA. The interface is simple to use but, especially if you are not too conversant with the use of a computer, can be slightly confusing when your mind is concentrating on the exam. You can try out the GOLA interface by CLICKING HERE to be taken to the City and Guilds GOLA page.

Just because the exam is taken online, does not mean that typical examination conditions do not apply - they do. You will need your copy of the IEE Wiring Regulations and On-Site Guide and you may also wish to take a copy of the AEEU Electrician’s Guide to Good Electrical Practice, although you may find this publication not essential.

As mentioned earlier, the 2381 exam is carried out using the GOLA interface. You are allowed a 10 minute tutorial before the actual 2381 examination starts to familiarise yourself with the interface. From personal experience, the interface is really quite simple and shouldn’t cause any problems. If you do have problems, you should inform the exam supervisor immediately, and before the examination starts for real.

On completion of the tutorial you are presented with a screen summarising the 2381-001 Requirements for Electrical Installations exam, including the time allowed and number of questions.

Clicking ‘OK’ on this screen brings up the GOLA interface help screen which gives you information on the icons and buttons you will need to navigate through your 2381 exam. Be sure you are happy at this stage because clicking ‘OK’ will start the exam, bringing up the first question,  and starting the countdown timer.

You can find out how much time you have remaining by clicking ‘Time’ on the toolbar. A warning is given when you have five minutes remaining.

As you work through the exam, you can ‘Mark’ any questions you are unable to answer, or you wish to go back to. You are able to go back and change your initial answer if you need to.

On completing your final question, you are given the option of reviewing your answers and going back to either all the questions or just the ones that you have ‘Marked’.

After you have completed reviewing your answers you click ‘Continue’ on the final screen to end the exam.

At the end of the exam, the results are collated and you are issued with a printout of your results. The results are broken down into the eight sections of the exam, giving you a good indication of your achievement.

There is software on the market that allows you to try the 2381 exam at home and get a good idea as to wether you are likely to pass or fail.
