TIP 1

You will need a copy of the IEE Wiring Regulations and also a copy of the On-Site Guide. The copies usually have to be ‘clean’ , that is, no notes scribbled on the pages and no ‘post-it’ type notes etc. on the books. Some examination centres provide you with their own copies which can be used just for the exam. It is strongly recommended that you get your own copies and take the time to familiarise yourself with the contents as much as possible. You do not have to memorise anything, but you must be familiar with the layout and use of the indexes.

TIP 2

Get familiar with GOLA. The City & Guilds 2381 examination is carried out online, using an online interface known as GOLA. The interface is simple to use, but, especially if you are not too conversant with the use of a computer, can be slightly confusing when your mind is concentrating on the exam. CLICK HERE to be taken to the City and Guilds GOLA page.

TIP 3

Use the indexes ! It’s what it’s all about ! If you’re looking for the regulation related to a particular exam question, many students find it easier to look in the index of the On-Site Guide first and, if it’s not found there, the index of the IEE Wiring Regulations 16th. Edition.

TIP 4

Stuck on a question ? Skip it ! You can answer the questions in any order you choose. If you come across a question you’re stuck on, use the ‘Flag’ option to mark it for coming back to. If you have some time left at the end of the exam, go back to the questions that you’ve flagged. If you still can’t find the answer, take an educated guess, you may get it right. If you don’t answer it then you’ll definitely get no marks for that particular question.

TIP 5

The 2381 examination paper is laid out in the same order as the IEE Wiring Regulations Sixteenth Edition : BS7671. Therefore, answers to early questions will generally be found early on in the Wiring Regulations book and vice versa.

TIP 6

It’s been said before, but it’s very important. The more familiar you are with the IEE Wiring Regulations Sixteenth Edition : BS7671 before the exam, the easier the exam will be. Read the regulations through several times and familiarise yourself with the layout and the exam will be a whole lot easier.

TIP 7

Invest in a Home Study Course such as this one from ElectaCourse and practice the included examination question examples. Time yourself whilst practicing the questions to give yourself an idea of the pace at which you’ll need to work. The more familiar you are with the exam process, the easier it will be.
